What the Heck do They Imitate?
Purists scoff and say these aren\’t real flies because they don\’t imitate anything in the river. So we asked the fly fishing entomology experts at The Catch and The Hatch and learned that these mop flies are effective for more than one reason:
\” Everyone thinks mop flies are just a gimmick, but if you look at them against what is active in our river systems, they actually imitate quite a few highly overlooked insects, which is likely responsible for their success. Mop flies can imitate a variety of insects and food in the water that trout often can\’t resist. Cranefly larva, large caddis nymphs, leeches, stoneflies, dragonfly nymph and damsel nymphs all are relatively well imitated with a mop fly. If you can look past the highly creative and odd material used in these flies, it actually begins to make a lot of sense. A lot of these bugs that the mop fly imitates don\’t have competition in an anglers fly box, which makes them even more effective when used because a fresh looking fly imitating something trout aren\’t used to can make a huge difference, especially on pressured waters.
It will take some time for purists to still accept these because they are highly unique, but I guarantee you the trout need little time to adopt them into their diet, because so much of what they imitate is already active in the rivers\”.
